TGIF was a favorite tv pastime of mine (we grew up proletariat, although we were conditioned to believe we were middle-class, luckily with the help of comrade Britney, I realized sooner rather than later.) Watching tv was a daily treat strictly after homework and no later than 8 pm, making us laugh and feel seen by fictional characters we highly revered.
As an homage to the TGIF of my childhood, I’m bringing TGIF to Youthquake. Except it won’t be centered on television entirely. Instead, it’s a fun feature spotlight where I feature my recommendations and reviews. Not to mention, we can dish on the current events that get our attention, pop culture. Yet also getting some much-needed it’s almost-the-week-end pick me ups. So I hope that Youthquake is sure to be your new favorite hidden gem of things to look forward to in the week.
Usually, my coping mechanism with overwhelming situations (which often makes me want to hide forever; I'm a cancer sun/moon) is to re-watch nostalgic favorites. Yet, in going through the archives of the 2000s for research, I stumbled on another unlocked memory. Oui'd is a hell of a drug, but it reminded me of the perfect combo of dinner and a movie. However, this is TBS specific. Which made me wonder, has there been an ideal time to bring back the nostalgic and therapeutic dinner & @ Movie from TBS?
Revamps and reboots rarely hit (I said what I said), yet I'd like to honor this pop culture all-star with my version of dinner and a movie with my curated picks for your entertainment.
Sadly, this week's first official entry didn't go as planned due to a 'backstabbing' confidant. Thus, my plans for sharing my actual cooking attempts via a broke & boujee Julie & Julia had to be scrubbed faster than Marjorie Taylor Greene's Facebook. Nevertheless, this week will go on because life is always messy, and well, so am I. Or as I've learned by watching years of Top Chef, it's called deconstructed.

My official first pick for Dinner and a Movie is Sugar & Spice (2001). My planned menu is a play on the John Mellencamp song, Jack & Diane (also the lead names) with chili cheese dogs. Not to be left out, for my veggie friends, chili non-carne. Ironically enough, in my quest to deliver a true to word y2k centric Newsletter, technology has the last laugh. My own “y2k” disaster happened, and my entire life shook. Pathetically, I’m one of those people who needs it as their livelihood. So I had a breakdown instead. Therapy has since helped, but since this is a safe space, I wanted to be honest and (over)share, and hopefully, my misery made you somewhat laugh. Next week will be the REAL ‘Dinner and a Movie’; this is a messy but real trial run.
Nevertheless, as a treat to all of you lovely subscribers (free or not) those who would love to see the cinematic early 00s classic, please hit me up via your preferred social media and it’s on me. Additionally, this coming week will feature a surprise recipe. 💝
