Without realizing or trying, this week’s Youthquake’s theme is a twisted take on the despair occurring in my home state of Texas. The winter theme is my way of making lemonade out of the sour batch thrown our way.
For those watching the news about Texas and thinking it’s comical, dramatic, or whatever else— I assure you, it’s every bit of the disaster you see on the news.
The current cruel winter weather isn’t something Texans have experienced before. Sure, we can somehow live and regulate our bodies to the brutal summer heat of 110°+, but winter weather isn’t something we ever encounter. As evident to the world now.
So I wanted to channel my sometimes Sad Girl/despair vibe, something very “on brand” (with no brand) for me. Except let’s add some mystical frozen component into my current anger and frustration aura to say that Ted Cruz is a bitch.

Don’t worry; I won’t get too political other than to say I hope the seditious traitor and known spineless coward all the karma going after his frigid heart.
The very same “man” who licked Tr* mp’s boots after the former POTUS insulted his wife in front of the world, as he said nothing. Yet as easy as it is to blame it solely on Cruz’s inhumanity, there are plenty of other state officials that are to blame too.
What makes it all the more hilarious is that other politicians agree that Ted Cruz is a bitch. Even scummy ones. Seriously scummy.
As Texans rally together and help each other as the useless local government is doing anything but their job, we’ll continue to rebuild because that’s the best thing to do after a disaster; this unwillingly extends to my personal life too.
It’s been an emotionally turbulent time with what seems like non-stop bad news. The wicked freezing temperature was the rotten cherry on top. Alas, we’ll rebuild yet again, physically and emotionally, but one thing is sure, I’ll continue to plot against corrupt and evil men— especially men who’ve shown their true selves.

As we entered a failed state due to a callous state government, I sat alone in my room, huddled with my weighted blanket for warmth— I couldn’t help but wonder, was the coldness just from the winter storm, or is it me?

Serendipity for this week’s The Audio Files is coming across the fantastic nostalgic track, Mýa’s Case of the Ex. The 2000 hit is recently featured in the latest season of Insecure.
Mýa’s ethereal yet sultry voice was heard throughout my adolescence with singles like Free, Takin’ Me Over, The Best of Me, and My Love is Like…Wo. Other tracks that I replayed were:
A Rugrats tune, Take Me There, with Blackstreet and Mase.
A cover of Tom Petty’s Free Fallin.
Lady Marmalade cover/collaboration
So in honor of my dear friend Keiran’s birthday yesterday, this week’s The Audio Files is dedicated to my beloved brother.
Since I had plenty of time to plan and write out this week’s newsletter, I came up with some snow day films to enjoy. It’s a mix of exactly my dueling personality, effervescent with a little cheese yet also dark and messy— honorable mentions: Groundhog’s Day, Dumb & Dumber, Inception, and The Shining.
Snow Day (2000)
Serendipity (2001)
Just My Luck (2006)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Snowpiercer (2013)
The Lodge (2019)
Misery (1990)
Fargo (1996)
As fate would have it, this week’s The Style Files is also on this week’s accidental theme. As Texas freezes, I was researching some style inspiration, and I came across this fantastically underrated Halle Berry ensemble circa 1995.
On top of being a gifted trailblazing actress, Halle’s giving us some legendary looks throughout the years and this jewel tone velvet dress is evident.

Meanwhile, this has been my style this week, except not as cool. Instead of a cute beanie, I’ve been living in a messy hair bun because we still don’t have running water. I’ll never take my 20-minute showers for granted again.

Are you a fellow Sad Girl? If so, how do you cope? For me, cognitive therapy’s helped me stop my anxious thoughts from spiraling into a tizzy. Perhaps you’re more emo? Take a trip back into 2002 with the scan below and find out!
