Influenced by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
You can tell a lot about a person on their style alone, and since we’re still getting to know one another, here's mine.
Style is a great expression; this is why I thought the first community post should be on style. As the legendary Yves Saint Laurent stated, "fashions fade, style is eternal."
Anyone can buy luxurious and expensive designer clothes, but an expressive style is something you can’t fabricate, as we’ve seen many a designer try to do.
Since we’re still getting to know one another, here are my icons whose style I reverie.
My longtime style icon (among many) is George Harrison, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Edie Sedgwick, Bianca Jagger, Sienna Miller, Alexa Chung, Erin Wasson, and María Félix. At least that comes to mind at the moment. Lastly, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, but ultimately, it’s Mary-Kate.
If you were a kid growing up in the ‘90s, Mary-Kate and Ashley were inevitable. It was like Beatlemania but for “tweens and teens,” cringe. I was no different; I have the VHS tapes (somewhere ), the books, and I watched their tv series. Full House is well known, but the late ‘90s and early ‘00s had some hidden Olsen Twin gems like So Little Time and Two of a Kind.
Sadly, Two of a Kind was canceled by Fox Family (RIP) after only one season. Yet it had a full-season pickup, so at least there are twenty-two episodes in existence (Disney later repurchased it, and it lived on through syndication for a while). I remember it fondly, even watching the theme song unlocks memories. If anyone’s interested in a cheesy ‘90s sitcom, this is perfect (although most episodes are hard to find, I’ve been on the hunt to own or binge-watch in order).
Looking back, I still love the ‘90s looks; however, adult me also loves current-day Mary-Kate and Ashley’s style. The dark monochrome and dark sunglasses are just a vibe, especially now more than ever. Here’s an MK inspiration/mood board.
Mary-Kate and Ashley had an everlasting impact on me, others (many others), in the ‘90s, and on. Even now, I still have their book Influence on my bookshelf, and since I’ve been down this pop culture rabbit hole, why not mention a significant influence sartorially.
