Cold Brew #8
#8 Includes Sneak Peeks of Apple Tv+'s Ted Lasso & Mr. Corman, Trailer Round-Up, and More
Youthquake is a newsletter with Pop Culture ∙ Commentary ∙ Critique
Wednesday’s Pop Culture Cold Brew is a collection of pop culture adjacency news that’s sincerely piqued our interest, only without the celebrity worship culture. We’re also sharing the entertainment news like new film teasers/trailers directly from our inbox to yours. Get into it below.
Our Pop Culture Round-Up features current news and events on popular culture; instead of exploiting the obsession with fame, relevancy, and frankly oversaturated celebrity culture; featuring recent adjacent news and events with added commentary.
While this may not be popular culture, it should be since America has fundamental systemic issues that a party switch cannot solve. We’re already in simulative times; see our current U.S. government below:
Interestingly enough, empathy for the working-class and activism from wealthier elites has evolved into some spectator sport in which they engage for tax— philanthropy reasons.
The new show The Activist with Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Julianne Hough as hosts was a competition show before ultimately changing the premise to a documentary due to the notable and rightful concerns of such an idea from the public. I won’t quickly judge or write it off, but it’s a safe assumption that no one read the room; I recommend Shamira Ibrahim’s Mic piece on the show is a must-read, HERE.
Here are the latest teasers and trailers for your unadulterated pleasure.
🎥 HBO’s Succession
A fictional power couple I can get behind.
🎥 Netflix’s The Harder They Fall
🎥 MGM’s Licorice Pizza
Paul Thomas Anderson’s follow-up to the fantastic six-time Oscar nominee, Phantom Thread, finally has an official poster. Not only that but a new name too; titled initially “Soggy Bottom,” Licorice Pizza also has a new trailer.
The cast includes Alana “Baby” Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie— it’ll be bittersweet to see Cooper Hoffman star in his late father’s frequent film collaborator. However, we’re intrigued to see PTA’s return to San Fernando Valley in the ‘70s, similarly to his breakout hit Boogie Nights.
Difficult to say why PTA changed the film’s name, but here’s my brief theory as to why:
🎥 Apple Tv+’s Mr. Corman
In one of my favorite moments from Mr. Corman, Apple Tv+ unveils a new sneak peek clip from the season finale— The Big Picture, premiering this Friday, October 1st. Viewers can feel the waves of panic that online dating brings— also while in a pandemic. So even if Josh (Mr. Corman) hates dates, Emily (Jamie Chung) likes finishing things. Watch the sneak peek of Mr. Corman HERE.
🎥 Apple Tv+’s Ted Lasso
Fans of Ted Lasso have one episode left of season two after this week, but fan or not, watching grown men dance to *NSync’s Bye, Bye, Bye should be enjoyed by many, so watch a sneak peek from the penultimate episode of Ted Lasso HERE. Catch up on the Apple Tv+ series HERE.
Due to the reality of the ongoing pandemic, I’ve been offline more. Primarily due to familial issues that caused my unexpected hiatus, including my Abuelo’s covid back in June. Still, I’m back with a new clarity of being less visible online; it’s a nice change of pace, plus it adds an added layer of mystery— frankly, it’s needed after being online since AOL.
Time away helped me revisit my former WIP’s, including my overdue Britney Spears feature, which will be out for this Friday’s TGIF.
Until then, if you’re looking to get into new shows and haven’t already, I highly suggest binge-watching HBO’s White Lotus, Hacks, and The Other Two.
