Tuesday’s Pop Culture Cold Brew is a collection of pop culture adjacency news that’s sincerely piqued our interest during these unprecedented times— only without the celebrity worship culture. You can expect occasional critique pieces on the pop culture and social mores along with entertainment news like new film teasers/trailers, directly from our inbox to yours. Get into it below.
Our Pop Culture Round-Up features current news and events on popular culture; instead of exploiting the obsession with fame, relevancy, and frankly oversaturated celebrity culture; featuring recent adjacent news and events with added commentary.
W Magazine released their Best Performance issue, my standouts in film performances and editorial looks below. Pictured as followed Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick... Boom!), Tessa Thompson (Passing), Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog), Ruth Negga (Passing), Emilia Jones (CODA), Kodi Smit McPhee (The Power of the Dog), Dakota Johnson (The Lost Daughter), and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) below.
Kyle MacLachlan, Ashton Sanders, Asa Butterfield, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Jeff Goldblum led an all-star lineup of male actors for Prada FW22. Could’ve been more interesting like Miuccia and Raf Simons could’ve used Willem Dafoe again.
Annie in New York shows Emily in Paree how it should be done.
Who had America’s southern belle and Ivy Park recipient, Reese Witherspoon, push for crypto future on their bingo cards?
Speaking of Reese Witherspoon, she recently posted some Girlboss habit tips for wellness goals for the New Year, and my eternal favorite, Ina Garten, shared her approach below. While I don’t drink and haven’t for almost two years, I think I’d adhere to the Ina Garten way of life in being moderately booked and busy— and carefree.
As a Lexi sun and Cassie moon, Sunday night’s HBO’s Euphoria was riveting. Recap the episode by Brooke LaMantia via The Cut.
Here are the latest teasers and trailers for your unadulterated pleasure.
🎥 A24’s X
The trailer launched last Wednesday, and its logline reads as follows: “At a secluded farmhouse in Texas, a film crew arrives to shoot an adult film. Their hosts, a reclusive elderly couple, take a special interest in their young guests. As night falls, the couple’s leering interest turns violent.” Starring Martin Henderson, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi, fresh off the heels of Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up), Brittany Snow, Jenna Ortega, Owen Campbell, and Mia Goth.
🎥 New Line Cinema’s Kimi
A thriller for the tech age starring Zoe Kravitz first had me with Steven Soderbergh. Kimi depicts a world where Kimi, the name of a fictitious Alexa or Siri-like digital assistant, is listening and recording every moment of people’s lives— Jexi, she is not, thankfully. The film also stars Rita Wilson, Byron Bowers, Jaime Camil, Erika Christensen, Derek DelGaudio, Robin Givens, Charles Halford, Devin Retray, and Jacob Vargas.
🎥 Netflix’s Inventing Anna
The Netflix series depicts the downfall of the real-life scamming socialite, Anna Delvy. The nine-episode limited series helmed by Shonda Rhimes premieres on Feb. 11th. Starring: Julia Garner, Anna Chlumsky, Arian Moayed, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney, and Laverne Cox.
🎥 Marvel’s Moon Knight
Oscar Isaac officially joins the MCU, continuing his Latinx in space legacy and not forgetting Ethan Hawke making his Marvel debut.
This week will mark my first anniversary since I randomly decided to have a ‘side piece.’ Initially, Youthquake began as a cursory pursuit to expand into the uncharted territory of freelancing with my many rejected pitches from blue-checked marked editors verified on Twitter. Never did I imagine it’d turn into a more profound catalyst than when originally launched— while I consider it a Beta year of testing, there’s still much more to come.
